Eating the right meals and drinking the right fluids, in the right amounts at the right time is what gym fanatics need to keep the engine running before, during and after workout.
Before: Fuel Up!
If you don’t eat anything before a workout, you won’t have energy to maximise your workout and you won’t have the ability to burn calories. Ideally, you should fuel up two hours before training by hydrating with water. At Humboldt, we offer a variety of healthy carbohydrates such as pasta, brown rice, fruits and vegetables.
During: Make A Pit Stop
Whether you’re a professional athlete who trains for several hours or you have a low to moderate routine, keep your body hydrated with frequent sips of water.
You don’t need to eat during a workout that’s an hour or less. Nutritionists recommend eating 50-100 calories every half hour of carbohydrates such as low-fat yogurt, raisins or banana.
After: Refuel Your Tank
After a workout, make sure you fuel with water. Blend your water with 100% juice such as orange juice which provides fluids and carbohydrates.
- Refuel with carbohydrates as well. Carbohydrates is the main fuel when you exercise. A few minutes after a workout, your muscles can store carbohydrates and protein as energy and help in recovery.
- Eat things with protein to help repair and grow your muscles. It’s important to know that these are general guidelines and we have different digestive systems and a lot depends on what kind of workout you’re doing.
It’s crucial to keep your engine performing. Know that what you put in your body (nutrition) is as important as you what you do with your body (exercise).
